The upgrade addresses the major bottleneck by improving safety and reducing congestion for the 160,000 drivers who use the M80 Ring Road daily.

The Victorian Government will contribute $150 million towards the project, with a further $150 million from the Commonwealth Government.

The project includes additional traffic lanes along the freeway, including on the EJ Whitten Bridge, as well as the installation of public safety barriers.

Cyclists and pedestrians will also benefit, with an upgrade of the shared user path on the EJ Whitten Bridge, which includes updated line marking and signs.

An electronic freeway management system will also be installed with overhead electronic signs that will provide better information for drivers including lane availability and variable speed limits to suit traffic conditions.

Successful applicants will be shortlisted ahead of the formal tender process from late 2015.

The expression of interest for the section opened on Wednesday, 30 September, and will shortlist experienced construction companies ahead of the formal tender process from late 2015.
