Fatal crashes from articulated trucks increase in 2014, but drop over previous three years

Recently released statistics show a 12.4 per cent increase in fatal crashes involving articulated trucks in 2014.Fatal crashes involved articulated trucks increased by 12.4 per cent in 2014 compared to 2013, according to the Fatal Heavy Vehicle Crashes Quarterly Bulletin released in April by the Australian Government Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development.

During the 12 months that ended December 2014, 114 deaths from 100 crashes involved articulated trucks, while 88 deaths from 76 crashes involved heavy rigid trucks, and 20 deaths from 16 crashes involved buses.

Although this was an increase over the year prior, it marked a decrease of 9.3 per cent over the three years leading to December 2014.

Fatal crashes involving heavy rigid trucks increased by 18.8 per cent compared with the corresponding period one year earlier and increased by an average of 4.2 per cent year over the three years to December 2014.
