BMD Constructions have begun resurfacing the Mitchell Freeway in Perth as part of the $62.5 million project.

The contractor is now a year into construction on the 7 kilometre project area from Cedric to Vincent Street.

So far 70 per cent of the projects noise walls have been installed and 30 per cent of the principal shared path has been upgraded.

Crews have also opened the Hutton Street on-ramp, re-constructed on-ramp’s at Powis Street, Vincent Street and Cedric Street and have installed a new shared bridge over Scarborough Beach Road.

The 60 metre long steel bridge was lifted into place over the road in September 2019. it spans 7.4 metres in width and features a separated cycle path and pedestrian path to make journeys safer for users.

Works have now begun to create the retaining walls on both sides of the bridge, which will connect at either end.

Concrete is expected to soon be poured over the bridge with its expected opening in March 2020.

The road is now expected to open in stages through late 2019 with the shared paths set to open early 2020.

180,000 vehicles use the Mitchell Freeway each day and this particular section is congested in the morning peak with bottlenecks at two seperate locations where four lanes currently merge to three.
