Major intersection opens on New England highway

Safety upgrades locked in for major Cairns intersections

Traffic lights have been switched on at the intersection of the New England Highway and Wyndella Road which received $11.5 million for the upgrade.

The project was delivered by Transport for New South Wales and was funded through the Housing Acceleration Fund.

The work included installing traffic lights and widening the highway at Wyndella Road to provide two lanes in each direction, as well as turning lanes in the future residential area of Lochinvar.

Monica Gibson, the Department’s Acting Executive Director Local and Regional Planning said this is helping to create better and more livable communities.

“This project will help to accelerate the delivery of up to 5,000 homes in the new family neighbourhood.”

Corinne Thompson, Transport for NSW’s Acting Regional Director Hunter, said building the additional lanes will cater to future traffic demands and improve safety.

“The new traffic lights will provide safe access to the New England Highway for thousands of new residents who will be moving into the area.”
