South Australian company Lucas Total Contract Solution has begun the upgrade work on the section of road from Iwantja (Indulkana) to the Stuart Highway as part of the $106.25 million APY Lands Main Access Road Upgrade Project.

This includes reconstructing and sealing the existing 7-kilometre road alignment and improvements to drainage.

The improvements will provide numerous community benefits and contribute to the national and State Aboriginal Affairs Policy objectives.

The government, in consultation with the APY Executive Board, has committed to ensuring a minimum 30 per cent of the total onsite labour hours is undertaken by local Anangu.

Construction of this section is expected to be complete by January 2016.

The overall APY Lands Main Access Road Upgrade Project is anticipated to be finished in late 2019.
