Earthwork trials have already begun as part of a major safety and accessibility upgrade on the Peak Downs Highway section of the project.

The upgrade is jointly funded by the federal and state governments and is aimed at improving safety, efficiency and catering specifically to the safety of road trains and over-dimensional vehicles.

Queensland Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said in a statement that about 295 jobs will be directly supported over the life of the project.

“A dedicated fauna underpass at the top of the range has been incorporated into the design which means there is a safe crossing point for koalas and other animals in the new alignment,” Mr. Bailey said.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2016 and the project is expected to take two years to complete, weather permitting.
