Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Barnaby Joyce said the project, fully funded by the Australian Government, would provide safer overtaking opportunities and improve highway traffic flow.

“The new northbound and southbound dual overtaking lanes will give drivers the chance to overtake slow-moving vehicles safely,” Mr. Joyce said.

“A wire rope safety barrier system will also be installed between the overtaking lanes to reduce the chance of head-on collisions.”

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said the design would involve detailed investigations and community consultation to refine the preliminary plans.

“The project team will also meet with nearby property owners soon to discuss the design and any potential impacts it may have,” Mr. O’Brien said.

“Community feedback will be considered, where possible, in developing the final design to meet safety requirements and the community’s needs. The project design is expected to be completed by mid-2018, with construction expected to start on the project toward the end of the year.

“Road safety is a top priority for me and these overtaking lanes will not only improve the speed and efficiency of the highway but increase safety for all motorists.

“The project follows the completion of the $38 million jointly-funded Bruce Highway (Tinana interchange) upgrade earlier this year.”

The overtaking lanes project at Tinana is part of the $275 million Australian Government funded Bruce Highway-Overtaking Lanes Program, which is being delivered under the $8.5 billion, 10 year Bruce Highway Upgrade Program, to which the Australian Government is committing up to $6.7 billion.
