The federal government has committed to the development of a metro rail line to Western Sydney International Airport before its opening in 2026.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the governments $3.5 billion rail package would help fund the project, with a further $3.5 billion coming from the NSW government.
“This project and the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport will drive economic growth for Western Sydney, boost jobs and housing and make it into a key hub of our city all as part of our Western Sydney City Deal,” Mr. Morrison said.
Development will begin with a $61 million injection into the Elizabeth Drive Overpass, a piece of early enabling infrastructure.
Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said the new rail line would connect the cities rail, road and airport infrastructure networks.
“This will provide a crucial north-south rail connection for the people of Western Sydney and create a new way of travel for the community,” he said.
