RFO made for first stage of $352M QLD project

Rockhampton Regional Council crews will be first to break ground on the $352 million Rookwood Weir project in Queensland.

Natural Resources Minister Anthony Lynham announced a request for offer had been made to council to undertake the approximately $6.5 million upgrade of Thirsty Creek Road.

The upgrade will involve widening a 16.2-kilometre section of Thirsty Creek Road to ensure the local road network can accommodate heavy earthmoving vehicles for later weir construction.

Infrastructure developer Sunwater was confirmed as project proponent in July 2018.

Once constructed, Rookwood Weir will have the ability to supply 76,000 millilitres of water to the region each year.

The weir’s major construction contract will be released to market later this year and awarded in mid-2020.

Sunwater CEO Nicole Hollows told a Parliamentary Estimates Committee hearing that final designs had been completed for the road upgrade and bridges, as well as 85 per cent of the design for the weir.

Dr. Lynham said council and Sunwater are expected to sign a contract to start work in late August, so gravel could be crushed in time for work to begin.
