Safety improvements to prevent rocks from falling on to the Great Ocean Road between Fairhaven and Lorne began in May.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the work is part of the Australian Government’s commitment to upgrade the iconic road.
“The Great Ocean Road is a major drawcard for thousands of visitors each year who use the road to visit the region’s magnificent beaches and national parks as well as major attractions such as the Twelve Apostles,” Mr. Truss said.
“With so many people using this road, this upgrade is vital to ensure the journey is safe and reliable for motorists.”
Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said the works were vital to prevent loose rocks falling from the cliff face between Fairhaven and Lorne, creating hazards for drivers and cyclists.
“This work will clear existing loose rocks and install wire netting over the cliff face to prevent future rock falls,” Ms. Henderson said.
“This is also an important economic investment. Rock falls can close the Great Ocean Road at times, impacting local businesses as well as residents.”
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said the Great Ocean Road is a major attraction for thousands of tourists each year.
“Once these works are complete, drivers will experience a safer journey along this popular scenic route,” Mr. Donnellan said.
Work is expected to finish by the end of July 2015.
The Australian Government has committed $25 million and the Victorian Government $25 million towards a comprehensive package of works on the Great Ocean Road.
