A level crossing at Toorak Road in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Kooyong will be removed using a rail bridge design solution, the Victorian Government’s Level Crossing Removal Authority has said.
Technical investigations undertaken over recent months found building a bridge over Toorak Road would least disrupt major underground utilities, and requires the shortest construction time, thus leading to less disruption for residents and commuters.
The elevated stretch of railway will be around 550 metres long, and will run between Kooyong and Tooronga stations on the Glen Waverly Line.
Major construction is expected to begin later this year, with works due to be complete by 2021.
Roughly 37,000 vehicles travel through the Toorak Road level crossing every day, according to the Level Crossing Removal Authority. Boom gates at the crossing are shut for roughly 35 per cent of the morning peak.
