State commits $12M to Newcastle intersection upgrades

The NSW Government has committed $12 million for two City Road intersection upgrades to provide better quality journeys for road users.

Both intersections, Kahibah Road in Highfields and Northcott Drive in Adamstown Heights have been identified as Hunter Pinch Points, where motorists experience traffic queues and delays.

The project will now progress to detailed design with calls for tender to deliver the upgrade expected in the first half of 2020.

A Review of Environmental Factors was carried out in February 2019, which highlighted concerns of potential impacts and how to reduce them.

Safe access for motorists turning from Highfields Parade into Kahibah Road and concerns around the road widening for residents along City Road, were among concerns.

A submissions report collating comments, responses and details around decisions is now available to view for the City Road intersection upgrades.

Works will start in late 2020 and the project is expected to take 12 months to complete.

The proposed upgrade involves extending right turn lanes and building new left turn lanes on City Road, adding an extra right turn lane out of Kahibah Road, and widening sections of the road to reduce queueing and improve traffic flows.

For pedestrian safety a new crossing connecting to a ramp and the existing footpath will be built across Northcott Drive and improvements to the existing City Road pedestrian crossing at the Northcott Drive intersection will be performed.
