Tasmania North East Rail proposal supported

The Tasmanian state government has welcomed the Legislative Council’s report which supports the North East Rail corridor.

The report recognises the economic benefits for the region as a result of the project.

It recommends the establishment of a heritage rail in between Launceston and Lilydale. It also suggests supporting the development of a rail trail for cyclists and walkers from Lilydale to Scottsdale.

The report also supports the assessment undertaken by the State Government for both the development of the heritage rail line and rail trail proposals.

The State Government believes allowing proponents of the rail line and trail trail concepts to undertake the respective developments in the rail corridor will maximise the chance of both projects to become viable tourist attractions and benefit the North East communities.

The State Government has long supported the development of the North East Rail corridor to provide a boost for tourism and recreation in Tasmania’s North East.
