Tender released for the South Eastern Freeway in SA

Two companies have been invited to tender for the Intelligent Transportation Systems work on the South Eastern Freeway in South Australia.

Upgrades on the Freeway will include a third lane added in both directions and the installation of Intelligent Transport Systems infrastructure.

The $14.2 million project is jointly funded by the state and federal governments is expected to ease travel times for local, regional and interstate businesses.

Automated incident detection using video technology, CCTV and variable speed limit signage will be included in the intelligent transport systems upgrade.

Successful applicants will be invited to progress the design and construction of the Intelligent Transport Systems infrastructure and will work with construction companies to deliver the works in late 2019.

Construction works will include, road widening, lighting upgrades, relocation of safety barriers, improve draining, upgrading pavement and new bitumen surfacing and audio tactile line marking.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the project will help to reduce the number of accidents and stabilise motorway speeds.

“The Federal Government has a role and responsibility to help build productivity for people in regions, and understand the importance of getting people home sooner and safer,” Mr. McCormack said.

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll said this was an important project in the State Government’s $11.9 billion pipeline of infrastructure works.

“This important upgrade will also improve the passage of freight between South Australia and the eastern states as 10 per cent of the traffic using the freeway are heavy vehicles,” he said.
