Traffic light trial to speed up tram times

New traffic light technology introduced under a trial will make tram rides quicker and more reliable.

The trial will see trams given priority over other road users when delayed through the use of cooperative intelligent transport system technology.

The trial is funded through the Andrews Labor Government’s Smarter Journeys program which supports initiatives to reduce road congestion across Victoria and will be coordinated by The Australian Road Research Board.

The signaling system will use GPS technology to track the position of trams and use road conditions to determine traffic light sequencing.

Starting in March, the technology will be fitted to 25 trams on Route 75, running along Toorak Road and Burwood Highway.

Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne said the trial hopes to reduce journey times for the 200 million passengers who travel on trams every year.

“We’re getting on with delivering upgrades that will get people where they need to go safer and sooner,” she said.
