A report outlining strategies to grow apprenticeships and traineeships was welcomed by state Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery this week.

Key findings include more financial incentives for employers to take on apprentices, less red tape for employers, better promotion of the VET sector amongst young people and a sector that is easier to navigate, customer focused and flexible.

Ms. Ellery said the report was in line with the Government’s plans.

“We have revamped industry’s involvement in Western Australia’s training system through reinvigorating the State Training Board,” she said.

“We will be using the recommendations of this report to increase the take-up of apprenticeships and traineeships. The McGowan Government is delivering on its commitment to rebuild the training sector by re-engaging industry in training. This is a critical part of our work to boost jobs and opportunities in the State.”

Ms. Ellery cited a number of projects already underway through the McGowan Government’s Plan for Jobs initiative.

Those include a TAFE fees freeze, the establishment of TAFE Jobs and Skills Centres, and the reintroduction of training in craft industries such as wood machining, vehicle trimming and textile fabrication.
