A grants and partnerships program funded by the Victorian Government will connect inner west communities during the construction of the West Gate Tunnel.
According to a West Gate Tunnel Authority statement, groups can access the $10 million West Gate Neighbourhood Fund to finance community led projects that benefit neighbourhoods during construction.
“The West Gate Neighbourhood Fund ensures that benefits for the community are felt sooner rather than later, and will build on the package of improvements the West Gate Tunnel will deliver to make it an even better place to live,” the statement reads.
“Once complete, the West Gate Tunnel Project will change the way roads are used in the inner west, getting over 9000 trucks off residential streets in the inner west making them safer, quieter and cleaner.”
The project will also deliver over nine hectares of new open space, quieter parks and sports grounds through noise walls and 14 kilometres of new and upgraded bike paths.
The grants and partnerships program will be managed by the West Gate Tunnel Project team in the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority, and is open to community groups and organisations in the Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong City Council areas.
