CIMIC Group’s CPB Contractors and UGL, in a joint venture with Ghella, have been selected by the New South Wales Government to deliver stage 1 of Sydney’s M6 motorway.

The design and construction contract for the motorway is set to generate approximately $1.95 billion to the CIMIC Group companies.

Stage one of the construction will connect south Sydney to the city’s motorway and highway network. This will result in improved journey times and reduced congestion.

The $2.5 billion stage one will also reduce the number of trucks in local streets and traffic, with alternate routes for freight another benefit of the construction.

CIMIC Group executive chairman and chief executive officer Juan Santamaria said that all companies will ensure major improvements for Sydney’s road infrastructure.

“Our companies have specific expertise in delivering motorways in urban areas. This experience will be applied to safely and successfully deliver the M6 stage one for the NSW Government,” Santamaria said.

Ghella Australia managing director Marco Fontana said the M6 is the fourth major project awarded to Ghella in Australia over the past decade.

“Australia is a strategic market for our company worldwide and this award confirms the mutual commitment between Ghella and the Australian infrastructure industry; we look forward to continuing to contribute to the delivery of such an exciting pipeline over the coming years,” Fontana said.

The contract will also deliver an underground motorway, connecting President Ave, Kogarah and the M6. The construction will include additional tunnels, ramps and shared cycle and pedestrian pathways as part of stage 2 of the motorway upgrades.

UGL managing director Doug Moss said the company was eager to begin construction on the joint project.

“UGL is helping to improve transport infrastructure right across Australia, and we look forward to bringing our expertise to the M6 project,” Moss said.

Work on the project will commence in 2022 and is expected to be completed by 2025.
