Transport for NSW is inviting community and stakeholders to have their say on the proposed safety improvements for the Bruxner Highway intersection with Molesworth Street at Lismore.

Among other changes, the proposed plan involves converting the intersection from a roundabout to traffic lights to improve traffic flow.

The New South Wales Government has committed $6 million to reduce congestion and improve safety at this busy intersection, which has experienced 72 crashes over the past 10 years.

NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said assessment by Transport for NSW and Lismore City Council had found transition to a signalised interaction to be the best way to reduce congestion and improve safety and connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists.

“About 25,000 motorists pass through this intersection every day so the proposed improvements will improve travel times, local access and efficiency,” the Minister said.

The concept design released by Transport for NSW proposes increasing the number of lanes to include dedicated turning lanes, adding ‘storage’ lanes for vehicles stopped at the intersections, signalising pedestrian crossings and maintaining footpaths.

The benefits of this design compared to other options considered include no impacts to Heritage Park, maintaining the existing fence between Heritage Park and the road, the removal of fewer car parks and reduced costs due to avoiding the retaining wall on the bridge.

Design aspects under review include: minimising loss of car parking spaces on the northern side of Bruxner Highway, lane reconfiguration to further improve traffic efficiency and minimising impact to trees and vegetation.

While no trees will be removed from Heritage Park, some trees which are currently in the road reserve between the park and the road will be removed.

Community members and stakeholders are encouraged to send their submissions on the proposed improvements by completing the online survey at yoursay.transport.nsw.gov.au/molesworth or via post or email by Friday 30 July.

All feedback received will be passed to the project team to consider as part of developing the project.
