Contractor completes Merimbula Airport $4.4M upgrade

$29 million for regional airport upgrades

Local company Joss Construction has completed a $4.4 million dollar upgrade at the Merimbula Airport terminal.

An estimated 60,000 travellers will use the upgraded terminal every year, providing a gateway for professional visitors and tourists to visit the South Coast.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the construction of a new arrivals terminal, secure luggage holding area and carpark expansion had increased the airport’s passenger handling capability.

“These upgrades have improved accessibility, safety and capacity which means Merimbula Airport will now be able to service more passengers and a wider range of passenger aircraft, supporting business and tourism to this wonderful region,” Mr. McCormack said.

Valley Shire Council Mayor Councillor Kristy McBain said it’s fantastic to see the travelling public enjoying the added comfort and improved facilities the new terminal has brought.

“The airport user groups played a key role in the development of the plans and STEA Astute Architecture and Joss Constructions have done a tremendous job in turning the vision into reality,” Cr. McBain said.

The $4.4 million upgrade was jointly funded by the Federal Government and the Bega Valley Shire Council. The Federal Government invested $1.2 million with the council investing the remainder.
