Contractor underway with major utility relocation on the North East Link

CPB Contractors are working to remove a large, high pressure gas main under Greensborough Road to set up for the North East Link.

Night works will be underway for the next several months to minimise disruption for the 68,000 people that use Greensborough Road daily.

Removal of the 2.5 kilometre gas pipe is being relocated as part of the early works package which is expected to create 1000 jobs.

The package also includes moving 34 kilometres of gas, water and sewer pipes and drains to enable major construction to begin next year.

Trenches up to 12 metres long and more than three metres deep will be excavated to allow a new gas-line to be laid under the western lane of Greensborough Road. This will leave a single lane in each direction at night, when works around the gas main are undertaken.

The formal acquisition process will now begin for the major works package. It was delayed three months due to the coronavirus.

Works have also started on the $12.2 million upgrade of Greensborough College’s sports facilities, which include a natural turf AFL and cricket oval with lighting, a synthetic turf cricket pitch and a new synthetic soccer pitch and a new pavilion.

Once North East Link is built, it will take up to 19,000 cars and trucks off Greensborough Road every day.

So far design for the project has managed to halve the number of homes set to be acquired from 75 to 36, with work continuing to further reduce that number.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said this is another important step in building Melbourne’s missing link – while it can’t be done without some disruption, we are doing our best to minimise impacts and we thank locals and drivers for their patience.
