Crews to begin $9.6M upgrades to Princes Freeway in Geelong

A program of upgrades along the Princes Freeway worth $9.5 million will to get underway next week.

The asphalt works are hoped to provide a safer and smoother journey for thousands of people that use the corridor each day.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said the program of rolling works to asphalt 14 kilometres of key sections on the route between Waurn Ponds and Little River will start Monday 9 November.

“We’re rolling out a major program of work on this important route over coming months to provide everyone travelling between Melbourne and Geelong and beyond with a smoother, safer and more reliable journey,” Carroll said.

“Crews will work on these sites outside peak travel times to limit the disruption to traffic, particularly when Melburnians could soon be able to safely visit and enjoy all that the Surf Coast and south west Victoria have to offer.”

These upgrades come as part of the Victorian Government’s two-year $425 million investment to rebuild and resurface regional roads.

As part of the program 11 sections of Colac-bound lanes and five Melbourne-bound lanes will be upgraded.

On average the Princes Freeway in Corio sees 47,000 commuter, commercial and tourist vehicles daily.

Lane closures and reduced speed limits will be in place, however every effort will be made to limit the disruption for drivers.

These upgrades will be in addition to the nearly 30 kilometres of improvements delivered along the Princes Freeway over the past two years.
