Downer has won the Community Waste Award and Waste Management Award at the annual 2021 WasteSorted Awards for its Reconophalt product.

The awards acknowledge and showcase innovative projects that are improving the recycling and waste industry in Western Australia.

Downer’s Reconophalt product is the first asphalt product in Australia to contain recycled content and waste streams that were originally bound for landfill.

According to Downer, Reconophalt brings no increased environmental risks and contains waste such as soft plastic from bags and packaging, waste glass, toner from printer cartridges and crumb rubber from end-of-life tyres.

According to Western Australia Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson, the 2021 award finalists all showcased solutions for the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste.

“They also assist the state government in its goal to promote a cleaner, more sustainable environment in Western Australia, with at least 75 per cent of waste generated our state reused or recycled by 2030,” said Sanderson.

Run by the Waste Authority, this year’s awards received nearly 80 nominations with 40 finalists chosen from a range of organisations such as businesses, governments and community organisations.

“I commend each of the 2021 WasteSorted Awards winners, finalists and entrants for their commitment to achieving reductions in waste and an increase in resource recovery,” said Sanderson.
