Engineers invited to share views on artificial intelligence

The Australian Government has invited engineers to submit to a discussion paper about the ethics of artificial intelligence in Australia.

Engineers across all disciplines have been encouraged to have their say in the further development of artificial intelligence.

The government has said the paper is intended to guide integrating artificial intelligence policies and strategies that will provide positive development and use of the technology.

“AI has the potential to provide social, economic, and environmental benefits,” the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science stated.

“For Australia to realise these benefits, it’s important for citizens to have trust in how AI is being designed, developed and used by business and government.”

Developed by the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation’s (CSIRO) data science research and engineering unit, the paper aims to ensure the responsible application of artificial intelligence.

A committee of industry, government and community experts and CSIRO researchers guided development of the ethics framework.

Consultative workshops were also held in Melbourne, Sydney Brisbane and Perth last year.

Comments and submissions on the discussion paper close Friday 31 May 2019.

These will be published on the Department of Industry Innovation and Science consultation hub.
