The federal government has announced an investment of $10 million between three projects in Western Australia’s south-west to create jobs and provide economic stimulus post COVID-19.

According to Michael McCormack, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, this investment forms part of the federal governments overall commitment to support areas in regional Australia during COVID-19 recovery.

One of the projects, titled the Food Organics Garden Organics project, will see $6 million invested into a new garden organics compost facility at the Bunbury Harvey Regional Council’s Stanley Road facility.

This will allow the council to upgrade its current composting operations while increasing organic production volumes to 35 kilotonnes a year, scalable to 50 kilotonnes per year

“This investment shows the Australian Government is dedicated to improving recycling facilities for our communities as well as supporting industries such as agriculture and transport,” said Nola Marino, Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories, Federal Member for Forrest.

The new compost facility will utilise novel in-tunnel technology and decontamination units to upgrade and refine its current organic products.

The project aims to supply projects such as the Bunbury Outer Ring Road project with organic products while supporting local aboriginal business across transport and agriculture.

The second project will see $2.86 million invested into a new Nannup Trial Town Project which will create a mountain bike park, a freestyle jump park, gravel and road cycling routes, a native forest mountain bike park and construction of related infrastructure.

“The new Nannup Trail Town project will transform Nannup into a recognised tourism destination for trails with a diverse product offering which will attract a large number of visitors, trail users and investors to the area,” said Marino.

According to Marino, rebranding Nannup as a tourist destination will diversify its current local industries and support growing infrastructure such as restaurants and shops.

The third project will see $0.98 million invested into a trail bike hub in the Shire of Manjimup, which is expected to attract over 33,600 visitors annually.

Similarly, to Nannup’s tourism plan, by attracting visitors to Manjimup, it’s expected that $12.8 million of visitor expenditure will be injected back into the shire, supporting 75 jobs yearly once completed.

“The hub will develop new trails and tourism experiences, deliver marketing activities to raise awareness, as well as enhancing key supporting infrastructure, from accommodation providers to hospitality and bike shops that cater for trail bike riders,” said Rick Wilson, Federal Member for O’Connor.

This funding is part of the federal government’s plan to invest $100 million over two years into the Regional Recovery Partnership that covers ten regions across Australia.
