The project involves delivering the 4.6-kilometre extension connecting Queanbeyan East with Karabar at the Edwin Land Parkway intersection with Old Cooma Road, and includes a 700-metre upgrade of the existing Ellerton Drive.

WBHO Infrastructure was awarded the contract to deliver the project in September and will aim to complete the extension by mid-2020.

Member for Monaro John Barilaro said it would create a safer and more efficient corridor, connecting Queanbeyan East to the growing southern regions of Googong and the future development in Tralee.

“[This month] we are turning the sod on an important project for Queanbeyan and the greater region. The Ellerton Drive extension will ease traffic congestion on local roads and improve response times for our emergency services,” Mr Barilaro said.

He said the extension would reduce travel times across the route by 38 per cent and direct heavy vehicle traffic away from schools.

The Australian and NSW Governments have each committed $25 million towards the project, with Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council providing $36 million.
