Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester has announced a review of aviation safety regulation in relation to the operation of drones.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester has announced a review of aviation safety regulation in relation to the operation of drones. This week, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester has announced a review of aviation safety regulation in relation to the operation of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), or drones.

The review will be overseen by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and ensures the aviation safety regulatory system in Australia continues to facilitate a safe flying environment for all users, but also allows for growth and innovation in drone usage.

“CASA will take into account the views of industry and the community, as well as the work on drone safety recommendations by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO),” said Mr. Chester in a statement.

“This review follows recent amendments by CASA which were also supported by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs in its report on RPAS operations.

“The amendments, which place strict requirements on how and where drones can be operated, were formulated following consultation with industry stakeholders.

“Under the new rules commercial operators are still required to register with CASA and to notify CASA where they intend to operate.

“Heavy penalties apply to those who break the rules and serious breaches may be referred for criminal prosecution.”
