The $248 million Hallam Road level crossing removal and station building contract has been awarded, with works set to start in the coming weeks.

Project works are expected to create 900 local jobs at the peak of construction. The alliance crews will begin with site preparation including piling, electrical and steel works.

Laing O’Rourke, Jacobs, Metro Trains Melbourne and the Level Crossing Removal project make up the alliance for project delivery.

Removal of the level crossing comes after 14 near misses in the past 10 years. Traffic delays are also common with boom gates down for around one third of the two hour morning peak.

A rail bridge will be built to remove the level crossing and improve safety, traffic flow and pedestrian connections.

The new Hallam Station will include a dual-elevated platform with modern passenger facilities and improved pedestrian and cycling connections.

Hallam Road level crossing is expected to be removed by 2022.
