Local contractor begins work on $55M Northern Tasmania freight route

Tasmanian company Hazell Bros have started works on the first stage of the Northern Roads Package.

With a total of $55 million in upgrades, the work will provide a more efficient route for freight vehicles travelling in northern Tasmania.

Hazell Bros crews have begun to set up site on the Batman Highway between East Tamar Highway and the Batman Bridge.

Major construction this stage of the project is due to start in later in January and is expected to be complete by mid-2021.

Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson said the Northern Roads Package would create better transport routes across Tasmania.

“The package will provide a more efficient route for freight vehicles travelling between the industrial precinct of Bell Bay and the Bass Highway,” Ferguson said.

“Upgrades to Batman Highway, Frankford Main Road and Birralee Main Road will better accommodate heavy freight vehicles, making freight transport in Tasmania safer and more reliable.”

The upgrade will include constructing sealed shoulders in order to make the road safer for heavy vehicles.

Planning is also underway for the future Frankford to Birralee Road upgrades with the full program of works expected to be finished in 2024.

The project is jointly funded, with the Federal Government committing $44 million and the Tasmanian Government committing $11 million.
