Exhibition Station’s existing western platform has been demolished to make way for construction of the Cross River Rail station and tracks.

A 75 person construction team will undertake the works which include the construction of a new island platform to facilitate multidirectional travel, piling pad construction, water main and sewer installation and demolition of existing pavement.

The station is situated at the RNA Showgrounds and will provide commuters with round trains to events and the surrounding business and health precinct.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said this is a really significant milestone for the much-needed upgrade of this station to ensure train services operate here every day of the year, not just for special events like the Ekka.

“The Ekka is the most well-known and celebrated event held each year at the Brisbane Showgrounds, but at their peak, they can host up to 250 events a year,” Bailey said.

“This new station will deliver trains into the heart of this heritage-listed precinct for residents and businesses, visitors and staff at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the thousands of people who visit the Ekka, the Convention Centre and nearby bars and restaurants.”

Cross River Rail tracks will sit around four metres above the RNA Showgrounds. A viaduct will be built to support this and is expected to be complete in time for Ekka next year.

Exhibition Station is expected to be open for daily use by 2025, Cross River Rail’s opening year.

The station is expected to see 9000 weekly passengers by 2036.
