The new Cheltenham Station has opened to the public after two months of intensive work on the Frankston Line.

Works continued with strict safety measures to adhere to Victorian level three and four restrictions over its construction timeline.

Construction on large-scale public infrastructure projects has been deemed critical under Victoria’s stage four restrictions so works on most level crossing removal projects continue with strict health and safety protocols and significantly reduced workforce numbers.

Cheltenham Station is the eighth of 12 new stations set to be built on the Frankston Line. The station upgrade came in conjunction with three level crossings between Cheltenham and Mentone this year. A total of 18 level crossings will be removed on the Frankston Line as part of a total $3 billion investment.

The new station has two sets of lifts and stairs and a new forecourt and community open space along Charman Road. Both the new Cheltenham and Mentone Stations are five-star Green Star design rated with solar panels, water saving and rainwater collection the stations will significantly reduce potential emissions.

A multi-level rail passenger carpark constructed near the station will be completed next year. Works will also continue on finishing touches at the station and on a walking and cycling path between Cheltenham and Mentone.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said despite the challenging conditions the pandemic has created, we’re continuing work on our critical infrastructure projects with strict safety measures to create safer connections for our communities and support local jobs.

75 level crossings will be removed by the Victorian Government by 2025. The Cheltenham and Mentone project brings the total level crossings removed to 38.
