The five innovations have been announced as winners of the organisation’s Innovation Network: innovating regional road maintenance competition, which aims to bring safer and more efficient maintenance solutions to the state’s roads.

More than 80 submissions were considered by RMS, with the top 10 chosen and invited to pitch their innovations to a panel of industry experts, which resulted in the five winning pitches being chosen.

Fulton Hogan will trial its Laser Texture Meter system, which provides road profile measurements; Lendlease will trial its ‘Push-In’ technology to help improve traffic signal reliability and safety; and GHD will trial an Australian-first in-vehicle pavement evaluation application.

“The fact that Roads and Maritime is taking this on board shows they’re flexible, they’re looking to the future and they’re happy to change the way we’ve always done things,” Fulton Hogan Quality and Environment Manager NSW Katie McElhone said.

Black Moth Vision Systems will also trial its 360-degree vision system for heavy machinery to record road defects and road maintenance issues; and Concrete Pavement Recycling – a joint venture of NA Group and RPQ Group – will trial its concrete pavement fracturing technology.

“It was absolutely worth getting involved. Get in and do it, have a go. No idea is a bad idea,” Concrete Pavement Recycling Business Manager Marty LaNauze said.

Roads and Maritime Executive Director, Regional and Freight Roy Wakelin-King said he was impressed by the response to the inaugural event.

“We were hoping for a positive response and were quite literally overwhelmed by the sheer number of submissions from small sole traders all the way through to the tier one construction companies – with everyone putting their best ideas forward,” Mr. Wakelin-King said.
