The Motor Vehicles (Trials of Automotive Technologies) Amendment Bill 2015 will enable the trial of driverless vehicles by exempting them from select existing laws.

ARRB Group Managing Director Gerard Waldron applauded the South Australian Government in a statement for recognising the need to make legislative changes, which will ensure the driverless vehicle demonstration hosted by ARRB in the state on November 7 and 8 will not be the last.

The demonstration is part of the ARRB Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative (ADVI), which is designed to ensure the safe introduction of driverless vehicles to Australian roads.

“The amendments proposed to the Motor Vehicles in South Australia are inevitable in every state and territory, and we congratulate Minister Mullighan for being the first to act,” he said.

“These legislative changes are an essential part of the process to put driverless vehicles on Australian roads and ensure they can be safety adapted to meet the requirements of our unique road environment.”

Through its Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative, ARRB is supporting governments in bringing together leading local and international experts from industry and academia, including technology, automotive and insurance partners, to support Australia’s first driverless vehicle demonstrations.

By applying international research to the local road environment, the partner organisations will together seek to understand what is required to make driverless technology appropriate for Australian roads and safe for road users.
