The Western Australian Government has submitted a business case to Infrastructure Australia for the removal of up to six level crossings on the Armadale Line.
Level crossing removals at Min Street, Oats Street and Welshpool road have been allocated $415 millon in the 2019/20 budget. The business case further proposes three level crossing removals at William Street, Wharf Street and Hamilton Street.
Designs for the additional level crossing removals show elevated rail as the preferred option, with an option for road over rail at Hamilton Street.
WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the McGowan Government is cutting waiting time for drivers and removing six level crossings along the Armadale line.
“Submitting the business case to Infrastructure Australia is the next step forward to removing these boom gates. We plan to start procurement on this METRONET project later this year,” she said.
In total up to 2.8 kilometres of elevated rail could be laid on the Armadale line. This is expected to provide more opportunities for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists to safely cross the rail corridor.
On average the Oats Street boom gates are closed 233 times a day for up to one minute and 33 seconds per closure, totalling six hours daily.
The business case for this METRONET project will now be reviewed by Infrastructure Australia with procurement for the project expected to begin later this year.
