The community of Tamworth has had it’s say regarding future upgrades to the New England Highway.

The Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said that over 200 Tamworth community proposals were submitted, which will help dictate the final construction.

“More than 20,000 vehicles use this section of the road every day and it’s important we get the design right to effectively remove this major pinch point in Tamworth,” Toole said.

The $3 million plan will widen the Goonoo Goonoo road to two lanes, improving driver safety between Jack Smyth Drive and Calala Lane where over 20,000 vehicles use the road daily.

The Member for Tamworth, Kevin Anderson, said investigations into the upgrades were conducted by Transport NSW and the Tamworth Regional Council over two years.

“When comparing this section of road to other, similar roads in the state its safety performance was below average, so it is clear these improvements are vital,” Anderson said.

Community consultation also recommended the construction of traffic lights at the Scott Road intersection.

“While this intersection is outside the scope of this project, the NSW Government will consider it as part of a broader plan for the region,” Anderson said.
