The section road, between Old Coach Road and Malpas Road, is used by nearly 18,000 drivers daily.

Between 2005 and 2014, there were 50 recorded casualty crashes on this section of road, three of which were fatal.

The project is funded by the Motor Accident Commission, with main improvements to safety including:

  • A roundabout at the junction of Port Road and Main South Road
  • A 2-metre wide traffic median with wire rope safety barrier between Port Road and Malpas Road
  • Repositioning of the northbound overtaking lane on Main South Road near Malpas Road
  • Road widening and resurfacing

The funding from the Commission follows the release of the DPTI Road Management Plan, which identified a number of opportunities to improve road safety based of extensive consultation with the community and stakeholders.

“This road upgrade will reduce the risks from this dangerous stretch of road which is becoming busier as more residents move in to the Aldinga region,” said Member for Kaurna Chris Picton in a statement.

“This is the first intersection to receive an upgrade, with further works required in the future as outlined in the traffic management plan.”
